Artist in Residence
The Mercedes-Benz Artist in Residence Programme at Marsden brings a working artist, selected by the Head of Art and Design, to the school each year for a five week "residency".
| The resident artist has the use of a dedicated studio space in the Art and Design department, or ‘Art House’, and does presentations and master-class style workshops for students. |
At the conclusion of the residency a solo exhibition is hosted by Mercedes-Benz Wellington Star to celebrate the works produced by the artist during the residency.
"We are very grateful to Mercedes-Benz Wellington Star for sponsoring the Artist in Residence Programme. Having this long term commitment means we can plan ahead and secure the most appropriate high calibre artists for the position," says the Head of Art & Design, Mr John Denton. "They also provide a prize for a Senior student in Art & Design."
"The girls gain so much from having a working artist here. It inspires and motivates them and makes them think about Art in new ways. The possibility of pursuing a career involving Visual Arts becomes more of a reality for them."
We welcome all enquiries from practising artists and designers for the next academic year.
2010 Mercedes-Benz Artist in Residence

This year we are delighted to have Wellington photographer Caroline McQuarrie as the resident artist. While working with senior Photography students in preparation for their NCEA folio and scholarship submissions, Caroline will be producing a body of work for exhibition at the end of the residency on Friday 17 September.
During the residency Caroline will be following an investigation into the connections between photography and textile objects (see example below), exploring how meanings and narratives from people’s lives can be drawn from the works. Using an early photographic printing method called cyanotype and a strong sense of story telling Caroline will further extend the range of opportunities available to students studying Visual Arts.
Based in Wellington, Caroline is presently Senior Tutor and Programme Leader for the Diploma in Photography at Massey College of Creative Arts. She has shown her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions since graduating with a BFA in Photography and MFA with distinction at Massey University.
We are excited that Caroline will be sharing her ideas and techniques with students preparing for their NCEA portfolio submissions this year.
