Philosophy and Theology
Course in Philosophy and Theology
A group of students in the senior school has enjoyed the addition of a course in Philosophy and Theology to the curriculum. This Cambridge programme is labelled a pre-U course, which is described on their web page as ‘an advanced level course which calls for an independent and self-directed style of learning.’
Through Philosophy and Theology the students explore such questions as ‘how do we know what we know?’, ‘is what we see real?’ ‘can we prove that God exists?’ In the lessons students encounter logical conundrums which promote thinking. Teacher Nigel Schofield-Matthews notes that the lessons are characterized by heated discussions. There is considerable enthusiasm among the students for this subject which is just a little different from the rest. According to Alex ‘It raises really important questions for us to consider in our lives.’ and Emily commented that ‘You do your own independent reading but other people can help you. We’re really tight knit.’
Students sit an exam in June which covers the past 18 months learning. Our first group will be taking this exam in 2011. While Philosophy and Theology sits outside the range of usual qualifications, students have very much enjoyed the learning and thinking involved.
