Code of Pastoral Care

Guardianship

It is a requirement for each girl whose parents are overseas to have a responsible adult guardian of good character in Wellington while she is at school. The Guardian will be fluent in English and approved by the School. (References may be required). The Guardian will undertake the following functions:

  1. To take an interest in the student's progress at School and to maintain contact with the School.
  2. To be responsible for the student at all times when the School is closed, i.e. during holidays.
  3. To make any travel arrangements for the student, both within New Zealand and overseas.
  4. To accept responsibility for the student in the event of a serious sickness or other emergency.
  5. To accept responsibility for the student in the event of disciplinary action leading to suspension or explusion from the School.

We can recommend professional guardians who provide a range of services.

International Student Homestay Policy

All International students who study at Marsden must be living with a parent or legal guardian or be in a homestay. The School believes it is in the best interests of the students. Academic progress is enhanced when students are continually exposed to the use of the English language and greater study time is available within a safe homestay environment. The homestay family is supportive of the School.

The School has appointed a Homestay Manager whose job it is to select and monitor homestay carers for international students. The fee for the service is $50.00 per annum. The focus is on finding families who will provide a safe and supportive physical and emotional environment.

Guidelines:

Samuel Marsden Collegiate School will comply with the Ministry of Education's Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (2010) (The Code of Practice)

  1. All family members of the homestay are over 18 years of age will be Police vetted
  2. The Homestay Manager will make an assessment of the homestay carer's ability to provide suitable accommodation and appropriate physical and emotional support and guidance
  3. The School provides guidelines and support structure for homestay providers through the Homestay Manager
  4. The Homestay Manager will carry out ongoing monitoring of the homestay families. This involves a physical visit to each student's home at least once a term.

Guidance and Pastoral Care

A strong commitment to pastoral care throughout the School is part of the special character and philosophy of Marsden. All international students are supported by their:

  • Form Teacher or Tutor
  • Dean of International Students
  • Director of School (Pastoral)
  • Counsellor
  • Career's Advisor

The Dean of International Students ensures encouragement and support is provided for our students from overseas. An International Club assists students to integrate into the School community and share their experiences of other cultures.

Each student's academic and personal development is monitored by the Academic Director and the Pastoral Care system. Regular reports are sent to parents. Where necessary, these can be translated into the student's first language.

The Principal takes an active interest in the welfare of our students.
