Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award

Gold tramp

The Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award is a voluntary and non-competitive programme open to anyone aged between 14 and 25 years old regardless of background or ability.  It has three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

From 2010 all Year 10 Marsden students are enrolled in the Bronze award. Read Sophie Snaddon's report of her experience.

Students volunteer for community activities such as Surf Life-Saving, the S.P.C.A., sports coaching and the Karori Toy Library to complete their Service section of the award.

The Expedition section focuses on a student's development as an individual and how they work as part of a group, not just on overcoming the physical demands of the venture.

Marsden offers tramping in the Tararua Ranges, the Central Plateau of the North Island and in the South Island to students who want to complete the Expedition section.  They have to train, plan, practise and complete a journey on foot, horseback or by boat or cycle.
