Sports Awards 2011
Sports Presentation Evening 2011
Opening Speech – Mr Paul Tessier, Director of Sport
Good evening, honoured guests, ladies and gentleman and Marsden sportswomen I would like to extend a very warm welcome to you all tonight to help celebrate this year of sport at Samuel Marsden. Tonight we are here to celebrate our 2011 sporting year. Amongst our year 7 – 13 students there are 4 NZ representatives a large number with either NZ or Wellington titles, and 66 Wellington representatives. This is a fantastic achievement for a school of our size.
Thank you to our many staff, community, parent and student coaches, umpires, managers and supporters you for taking time to attend and support this evening and most importantly for your contribution towards delivering sport at Marsden. I would also like to thank the friends of school groups that greatly assist us in our Netball, Rowing, Hockey and Cycling programmes. Your input and assistance is greatly appreciated by the School.
Also I would like to Martine Foster, our Director of Development for her efforts in gaining sponsorships for the various codes this year so that they might attend tournaments and events outside of our region. We greatly appreciate her efforts and those funders that have assisted us this year who were the Four Winds Foundation, NZ Community Trust, Infinity Foundation, the Lion Foundation and the Trusts Charitable Foundation. I would also like to acknowledge the input from Leigh Perry our outstanding sports administrator who has been a huge part in the very successful delivery of the sports programme to the school and in putting the photo montage and music together for this evening.
The Sports Committee comprising 29 Heads of Sport was ably led by Madeleine Chapman with the expert assistance of Dee Renai. These students have been responsible for the promotion of sports, organising the various inter-form competitions, and both have contributed greatly to the organisation of tonight. Also thanks to Alex Stevenson who tonight is managing the control panel. We have managed this year to lift our participation rate to 90% for students involved in sport which is the result of a lot of hard work and the introduction of several new sports, namely Handball, Table Tennis, Adventure Racing and Golf and a greater commitment to Fencing and Cycling. To the Year 13 students here tonight and your parents, on behalf of the school and from me personally I would like to wish you all the best in the future. I hope that you look back on your sporting life at Marsden fondly. I wish you every success in your future sporting endeavours. Whatever pathway you choose to follow in the future hopefully you will continue to play sport and to the highest level you can achieve.

Outstanding contribution or performance in sport at Marsden in 2011
Coach of the year – Mr Rob Morrison 2nd XI Football team.
Rob Morrison took over when Alistair West left for Scots. He has coached a practice once a week for the duration of the season (and a few weeks last year) and increased this to two when they got involved in serious competition. His skills and knowledge are reflected in the success the team has experienced themajority of the team has remained the same since year 9 yet they have only moved out of last or near last place this year. The most impressive aspect of his coaching is that many in the team lacked good footballskills, yet he has drawn the best from them. He played them in position, drilled them, and was quite tough but always respected. He talked, they listened. The team has gelled under his direction. Attendance at practice and games was always near 100%, they actually discussed strategy in their spare time, and they lived and breathed it.
Team of the Year – The Marsden 1st XI Football team
The team enjoyed an extremely successful year finishing 3rd in the first round of the Wellington zone tournament gaining a place in the Regional competition and narrowly missed a place in the semi‐finals. At the Grant Jarvis tournament during winter sports week at Wanganui. They finished in a stunning 3rd place having the record as the best defensive team at the tournament. Sacred Heart finished 2nd at the tournament and as luck had it that was who they met on their return to Wellington in the playoff for 5th in the regional competition. The 1st Xi ran out the victors in this match following a penalty shootout.
All rounder of the Year – Madeleine Chapman
Madeleine was a member of the schools senior A basketball team, the 1st XI cricket team, the 1st XI football team and was the schools discus and javelin champion. She went onto win the CSW senior javelin final and then onto winning the NISS senior javelin. She was also a member of the Wellington women’s team – the Blaze and played in the Wellington U18 women’s cricket team.
Official of the year – Penny Thompson
Penny umpired at Regional one secondary school level for hockey this year. She then went onto umpire at the Marie Fry secondary schools hockey tournament during winter sports week. She did the playoff game for 5th and 6th and was the reserve umpire in the final. At the NHL championships held in Wellington Penny was appointed as one of the technical judges and was rewarded with her fine work over the week with an appointment to the Woman’s final. Penny has also earnt her Level three Technical badge
Volunteer of the year – Mrs Pauline Wake
Pauline has coached various Netball teams with great success over the last 6 years. Never seeking the top teams but working on the skills of the second tier teams and players with great success. Her players have enjoyed her as a coach and the impact that she has had on their skill sets. She has served the school on the FON committee over a number of years and has for the last few years volunteered to put together all of the netball team bags carefully ensuring that each team gets their required seasons kit. This is a huge task and one which we are very grateful.
