Freemasons' Scholarship
Congratulations to Corinna Howland (Y13 2006) who has received a 2010 Freemasons’ University Scholarship. This award worth $6000 was presented by HRH The Duke of Gloucester in May. Corinna will complete a Bachelor of Arts this year at Victoria University, majoring in Anthropology and History. Next on her list is post-graduate study in anthropology to PhD level. Following her Honours year, Corinna plans to work on a community development project in Africa, South East Asia or the Pacific, providing structured immersion into another culture, an invaluable experience for this budding anthropologist. Old Girls' Day 2010
It was a chance to catch up with old friends and to see how the school had changed over the years for Pat van Erpers Roijaard nee Webster (1940) pictured left and Jean Gilmer (1932) at Old Girls' Day on 29 October. Guest speaker at assembly was Old Girl, Felicity Lusk, who is Headmistress of Abingdon School, Oxfordshire, a 750 year old independent boys school full of tradition. Ms Lusk was Head of Marsden's Boarding School in 1973 and is back in New Zealand to film a documentary for TVNZ's "Sunday" programme.

The picture was donated to Marsden by Old Girl, Nicky Saker and her husband, Justice Mark O'Regan, to celebrate the posthumous induction of the famous writer and Marsden Old Girl into our Hall of Fame. Mother and Daughter Dinner
Employment specialist, Mrs Elaine McCaw, gave Y12 students a good look at what they need for next year, starting university and job interviews at the annual Y12 Mothers and Daughters' Dinner on 9 August. Mrs McCaw, now a professional director, spent her career in human resources before establishing her own executive search business, Bell McCaw Bampfylde. An Old Girl and mother of Head Girl, Kate McCaw, Mrs McCaw is on the Marsden's Board of Management,a Trustee of the Victoria University Foundation, a Board Member of the Wellington Hockey Association and a Trustee of The Black Sticks Foundation. Old Girls support Head Girl in Singapore
Three Marsden Old Girls met at the Singapore Youth Olympics in August this year to support 2010 Head Girl Kate McCaw who played for the bronze winning New Zealand Hockey team.
Pictured immediately after the game are: (From left) Rachel Uttley, Kate McCaw, Elaine McCaw and Leisel Griffiths together with Leisel’s two daughters. Both Rachel and Leisel played hockey for Marsden in the 1st XI in 1986 – 1988 whilst Elaine played in the 1st XI in 1978. (07/09/2010)
Old Girls' Nell Clere Music Scholarship
Everyone agreed the Swainson Memorial Music Competition on Tuesday night was a wonderful event. Congratulations to our two pianists, Isabel Kelly (Y10) winner of the Nell Clere Music Scholarship, and Georgia Steel (Y12) who was highly commended. The Swainson Memorial prize for best performance on the night went to vocalist, Lucy Sulzberger (Y13) and violinist, Enakshi Chakravorty (Y13) was highly commended. (26/8/2010)
Old Girls' Reunion Auckland
Sixty Old Girls had a great reunion at Kings School in Auckland hosted by Mrs Carolyn Prebble (nee Jackson) earlier this month.
Principal, Ms Jenny Williams (pictured right with Jenny Forsythe nee Aburn), Board of Management Chair, Ms Catherine Savage (pictured left with Anna Bashford nee Stevenson) and our Director of Development, Mrs Martine Foster thoroughly enjoyed the evening. (18/8/2010)
Old Girls’ Reunion Sydney
Tess Tapper (Kean ) and Nicky Waterworth (Barr) created a wonderful reunion for Old Girls at the Kirribilli Club in Lavendar Bay, Sydney on the evening of 27 May. Guest Speaker, Principal Jenny Williams showed a presentation of the school and its facilities, including photos of the damage caused to the roof by the March Tornado. Old Girls found it easy to catch up with each other well into the evening. (04/06/2010)
Prestigious Girdlers' Scholarship
Last year's Head Girl, Maria English (Y13 2009), has won the prestigious Girdlers’ Scholarship to study at Cambridge’s Corpus Christi College. Administered by the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors’ Committee, the Girdlers' Scholarship is funded by the Worshipful Company of Girdlers which traces its foundation back to medieval times as a craftsmen’s guild. The award, worth £25,000 per annum, is offered to one New Zealand “all-rounder” each year. Currently at Otago University, Maria will commence studying for a degree in Politics, Psychology and Sociology (PPS) at Cambridge University later this year. She is the 46th recipient of the scholarship and the first to study for the PPS degree. We wish her all the best for this exciting new challenge. Press release (11/03/2010)
Hannah Kitchen: United States Presidential Scholars Programme
Hannah Kitchen (Y13 2009) has received notification that her outstanding results in the SAT examination, have qualified her as a candidate for the 2010 United States Presidential Scholars Programme. The SAT is an entrance examination for universities in the United States, and Hannah, as an American citizen, chose to sit this in 2009, in addition to her New Zealand qualifications. In her letter from the United States Department of Education Hannah has been advised that out of the 3.2 million American high school seniors graduating this year, she is one of approximately 3,000 students to receive this invitation. This is an outstanding achievement for Hannah. We wish her luck in her application to advance to the next stage of selection in the Presidential Scholar’s Programme. Hannah will commence her tertiary studies later in the year at the prestigious College of William and Mary in Virginia, the second oldest college in the US. (08/02/2010)
