Junior Football Winners

Marsden Junior A Football team improved all season to win the Wellington Junior B grade. In a nail biting final against Wellington Girls' College they were tied 0-0 at full time which meant a penalty shoot-out.  After both teams had taken their five penalties the score was tied at 2-2 so it went to sudden death. WGC took the shot first and our goalie, Jessica Marett (Y8) saved it. She then lined up the penalty shot for Marsden and scored a winning goal low in the corner. A great game and a great result! Thanks to the managers, coaches and parents for their commitment and enthusiasm.

Assistant coach, Ross Marett had this to say, "I was really impressed with  the girls attitude and great team spirit and those that may lack some football skills certainly make up for it in effort making sure they were first to the ball and playing hard for the whole match. It was a pleasure to be involved with this team." (21/11/2011)

Creative Enquiry Symposium

Cooking over open fireEarthquake preparedness is the topic of this year's Creative Enquiry Symposium undertaken by our Y9 students. They have had a fascinating skype session with Avonside Girls' High School in Christchurch to hear first-hand what it is like to go through a devasting earthquake. Cooking baked beans in a billy over an open fire is just one survival skill they have tried, as well as talking to Red Cross and Civil Defence and looking at 'at risk' buildings in central Wellington. Run over three days and across all curriculum areas the Symposium concludes today with presentations by the students aimed at different target audiences (preschool, school-age, adults) on how we can all be better prepared if an earthquake strikes Wellington. Swimming for a cause

Old girl and Rhodes Scholar, Nina Hall will be part of the Rhodes Women's team to swim the English Channel for charity this month.
The team will plunge into the chilly waters of the English Channel without wetsuits, braving ship traffic and jellyfish, to attempt the historic swim from Dover to Calais. They are raising funds for the Acid Survivors' Foundation in Pakistan, which provides care for victims of acid violence - a brutal form of domestic violence that is not widely-publicized but all too prevalent. You can sponsor Nina and the team and help a worthy cause, no amount is too small to be appreciated. All donations go directly to ASF-Pakistan. (15/09/2011)

Cambridge Distinction

We are proud of Alex Hollis (Y13) who received Distinction in her Cambridge Pre-U Philosophy and Theology exams.

Marsden is the first school in New Zealand that offers a Pre-U (pre-university) course in Philosophy and Theology, which is geared towards giving students a taste of what studying at university is like. It allows them to research and develop their own thinking rather than repeat prescribed answers. As a result the attainment in this course is higher than that of a standard A level. It is hard going and demands a lot from the students, but the students who have taken this course absolutely love it. (23/08/2011)

Safety Initiatives

Safety of our students is paramount. In 2011 we are introducing three new initiatives.

  1. The Donald St entrance to the school will be closed to school traffic in the mornings and afternoons. Parents are asked to drop girls off either on Donald St or at one of the other school entrances.
  2. The pedestrian crossing on Karori Rd will be patrolled by students, starting during Term 1. Any parents able to assist with this duty would be greatly appreciated and should contact the school office - phone 476-8707.
  3. Sun-safety. Girls at Marsden Karori will all be required to wear hats when they are in the sun during Terms 1 and 4. This means wearing a hat during PE lessons. The Uniform Shop sells the school cap or hat, one of which must be worn. Sunscreen lotion will also be available at many stations throughout the school.
