Ruth PaulVisiting Author

Author illustrator Ruth Paul visited the Marsden Primary as part of the New Zealand Book Council Authors in Schools programme. She provided a fascinating insight into her life, talking about her many books and the steps she goes through to create them. She always thinks about how she can improve on what she has done and gets much of her inspiration from her sons, one of whom gave her the title for her book The King’s Bubbles. (18/11/09)

Operation Christmas ChildThank you to all of our families who have participated in our community project Operation Christmas Child. Our Chapel has displayed a fantastic wall of 137 beautifully decorated and bursting boxes. The variety of the contents and the thought and generosity that has gone into this project has reinforced the spirit and care that we recognise in the Primary School. We also raised a total of $656 from donations to pay for the postage to Samoa, Fiji and the Solomon Islands. (5/11/09)

First Harvest

Homegrown sandwiches prove a success

Homegrown sandwiches

In the last week of Term 3 the Primary school harvested the first produce from their newly planted garden. Year 3 used the lettuces to make sandwiches that they then shared with the rest of the Primary school. They proved a great success! They are also growing herbs, beans, tomatoes and broccoli.

PrEP Marsden PrimaryPrEP Programme
The girls in Years 4 to 6 are working very busily on their Primary Enterprise Programme (PrEP) this term. All job applications have been received, interviews held and appointments made for the CEOs of each enterprise. The girls have planned a range of products and services to develop for Market Day and meet twice a week for business sessions. The marzzies (Marsden dollars) they earn for these sessions pay for the raw materials needed for manufacturing and also for materials to develop their marketing.
‘Financial literacy’ is one of the new buzz words in the education field and PrEP is the perfect time to align ‘real life’ and ‘school mathematics’. Market Day is on the afternoon of Friday 18 September. (19/08/09)

Library Week

Itiiti's Gift

Marsden Primary students joined thousands of other students in schools and libraries around the country today at 10.30am to hear the story of a girl who sets out to find her special gift.

The book they were read is Itiiti’s Gift by Melanie Drewery, illustrated by Wellington artist Fifi Colston

Our Librarian, Mrs Nicholas (pictured) read the book this morning to Years 1-6 as part of Library Week.

Writing for Story Competition

Library Week has been the inspiration for some fabulous contributions by Y6 students to an interactive story started by author, Fleur Beale. See details. We are delighted that Nina Richardson (Y6) has had her entry accepted as Thursday’s part of the 5 part story.

Pictured are Y6J students discussing their story. (12/08/09)

Science Fair

Mouldy BreadMarsden Primary classes have been preparing for their Science Fair.

The girls have been investigating a range of enquiries while keeping the questions at the back of their minds: is this a fair test, what is my hypothesis, what is my control, what is my variable, how shall I present my findings?  The girls of the Junior Syndicate have split into vertical groups for this topic, so that each class has a mixture of Years 1, 2 and 3.  (24/06/09)
