Sport
Students will be asked to register for sport during the fourth week of term one. Sign up forms for sports will be on the Sports Noticeboard in the gym. Meetings will be held for each sport as required.
Sporting opportunities at Marsden Whitby are increasing every year as the roll grows. Our Bradford Gymnasium, which opened in July 2010, houses full-sized basketball, netball and volleyball courts, alongside four badminton courts.
Marsden Whitby now has netball, hockey and football teams of our own and cricket is developing. We also offer badminton and running clubs after school.
Our Year 7 and 8’s compete in the Paramoana Inter School sporting competitions with other local schools.
We hold three annual school-wide sporting events - Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming. Students compete in a variety of events on behalf of their House, earning House Points along the way which contribute to the House Shield, awarded at Prize Giving each year. Champions in each sporting code may go on to represent the school in interschool or zonal, regional or national events.
The Athletics day is held in Term 1 at Adventure Park. Swimming Sports takes place at Te Rauparaha Arena. The Cross Country event takes place across Duck Creek in a beautiful countryside setting.
If students wish to play in a code which is not currently offered by Marsden Whitby, boys may apply through the Director to play for another school, in line with College Sport Wellington guidelines. Girls who wish to play a sporting code not offered at Marsden Whitby may join a Marsden Karori team.
Students also frequently enjoy impromptu games of cricket in our wonderful rural setting at lunchtime (pictured).
Through playing sport at Marsden Whitby we are providing students with the opportunity to learn about sportsmanship, team work, resilience, courage and commitment. We expect them to be gracious winners and good losers.
