Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award Leader, The William Pike Challenge Coordinator Facilitator

Jane Hazelton is the Award Leader for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award and the Year 8 William Pike Challenge Coordinator. In these roles, she organises camps for Year 8 and Year 10 students, tramps for Year 10, and a variety of service and outdoor activities for Year 8. She also manages programmes for visiting Toin students, supports relieving duties, and accompanies travelling sports teams.

Background

Jane has been part of the Marsden community for 27 years, bringing extensive experience as a former Year 8 Dean, PE teacher, and Food Technology teacher. While she stepped back from classroom teaching at the end of 2023, she continues to lead the Duke of Edinburgh and William Pike programmes, supporting students in developing skills, confidence, and resilience through outdoor and extracurricular activities.

Personal Insights

Resilience | Manahau is the Marsden value that resonates most with Jane - she is a “never-give-up” sort of person who values perseverance in all aspects of life. She finds it particularly rewarding to work with students outside the classroom, watching them try new activities, overcome fears, achieve personal goals, and gain confidence. Seeing students succeed in non-academic settings is a highlight of her work.

Outside of school, Jane enjoys living in Waikanae, playing golf and tennis, and keeping active with the weekly Kapiti Parkrun. She enjoys sewing, knitting, gardening and walking her dog Walter.
