Education Outside the Classroom

Primary (Years 1–6)

Primary students take part in an annual EOTC Week designed to connect learning across the curriculum with real-world, hands-on experiences. Each year level participates in age-appropriate activities that build independence, teamwork, resilience, and a love of learning beyond the classroom.

 

Highlights include:

 

Years 1–3

  • Visit to Wellington Zoo
  • Visual Arts experiences and collaborative art projects at school
  • Health and Physical Education activities at local recreation facilities
  • Social Sciences exploration of Marsden Village and the local community
  • Food Technology experiences at school
  • Year 3 sleepover experience

 

Years 4–6

  • Science and environmental learning at Ōtari-Wilton’s Bush
  • Physical challenges at Clip ‘n Climb
  • Health and Physical Education activities at local recreation centres
  • Cycling and road safety education programme
  • Creative arts workshops
  • Community scavenger hunt
  • Sleepover experiences

 

Camp

In addition to EOTC Week, every second year Year 5 and 6 students also participate in a camp experience. This programme provides an extended opportunity for independence, teamwork, and outdoor learning in a residential setting.

 

Otari Wilton (4Web)

Middle School

 

Year 7

Students begin their EOTC journey through local experiences that encourage curiosity, exploration, and engagement with the Wellington region.

 

Highlights include:

  • Science visits to Zealandia and Space Place
  • National Young Leaders Day
  • Visits to local landmarks
  • Outings around Wellington

 

Year 8

Year 8 students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones through outdoor education, challenge, and leadership experiences.

 

Highlights include:

  • Camp to Richmond, Nelson
  • William Pike Challenge, including a variety of service activities and land and water based adventures including sailing, kayaking and rock climbing
  • Outings around Wellington, including to the New Zealand Police Museum
  • Get2Go Challenge
  • Sports exchanges with other schools
  • AIMs Games

 

Year 9

Year 9 programmes focus on teamwork, participation, and community engagement.

 

Highlights include:

  • Adrenalin Forest
  • Social Studies visit to Parliament and Government House
  • Community projects

 

Year 10


Students are challenged to develop leadership, independence, and resilience through outdoor education and experiential learning.

Senior School


Year 11

Year 11 students participate in curriculum-based experiences that connect learning with real-world contexts.

 

Highlights include:

  • Physical Education team-building day at Fergs Wellington
  • Physical Education Skyline Walkway day tramp
  • Physical Education trip to Jumperama trip
  • Religious Education World Religions Trip
  • Religious Education visit to the Ngatiawa River Monastery
  • French cultural experience at a local French restaurant

 

Years 12–13

Senior students undertake specialised field studies, leadership opportunities, and experiences that support NCEA learning and personal development.

 

Highlights include:

  • Biology field study at Zealandia
  • Biology trip to Wellington Zoo
  • Physics flight experience
  • Geography field trips to Tongariro or Rotorua (offered on a biennial rotation)
  • Physical Education Tongariro Crossing or white-water rafting (alternate years)
  • Physical Education Tough Guy & Gal Challenge

Leadership, Service and Global Opportunities

In addition to year-level programmes, students may also participate in:

  • Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award
  • Community projects and service initiatives
  • Sports exchanges with other schools
  • Tournament Week and national sporting events
  • Toin Exchange to Japan
  • Exchange to Shanghai
  • International Service Trips to Fiji and Samoa

 

These experiences help students build confidence, develop new skills, strengthen relationships, and create lasting memories while extending their learning beyond the classroom.
