Background and Education

Kate Feary Douglas has been part of the Marsden community for many years, bringing a broad range of teaching experience and a strong passion for innovation in education. She began her career in primary teaching before moving into the field of Digital Technology, where she now works with students across a range of year levels. Kate is committed to building digital confidence in her students and supporting them as they grow into creative, capable learners in an increasingly digital world.

Kate holds a Bachelor of Teaching endorsed in Primary from the University of Otago, and a Certificate in Catechetical Studies, also from Otago. She is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Information Sciences through Massey University, supported in part by a 2024 study grant awarded by HETTANZ (Home Economics and Technology Teachers’ Association of New Zealand).

Empowering Through Digital Technology

Kate is passionate about making digital technology accessible and exciting, particularly for girls. “I believe in empowering girls to code and get excited about it,” she says. “It’s not just about using tech, but about fostering creativity, building confidence, and showing them the possibilities that exist in a rapidly changing digital world.”

Her aim is to create a learning environment where students feel inspired and confident to explore technology, develop critical thinking skills, and see themselves as future innovators and problem-solvers.

Life Beyond the Classroom

Outside of school, Kate loves spending time with her young family, and embracing the outdoors, whether it’s walking with friends, mountain biking at Makara Peak, and spending time on the water fishing. Indoors, she’s just as enthusiastic about reading, listening to music, sharing meals with family and friends, and hosting dinner parties - always with a carefully curated cheese platter!
