About the Tokomanawa Queens
Since their inception, the Tokomanawa Queens have quickly risen to prominence in New Zealand’s basketball scene. The team claimed the inaugural Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa championship in 2022 and finished as runners-up in 2023. This season, they return with a star-studded lineup that includes Tall Ferns captain Stella Beck, WNBA Seattle Storm player Jordan Horston, and University of Tennessee’s towering 6'6" power forward Tamari Key. The squad also features back-to-back WNBL champion Lou Brown, Argentinian star Florencia Chagas, and Korean-league MVP Jihyun Park.
The Queens’ roster is further bolstered by local talent, including Awatea Leach, Ashley Taia, Alana Paewai, Lauryn and Keriana Hippolite, Jacinta Beckley, and Porirua’s own Grace Hunter, nicknamed the “Princess of Porirua.” Every player on the team has donned the black fern, solidifying the Queens as one of the most formidable teams in the league.
Exclusive training session for Marsden students
In addition to the games, the Queens will be offering a special training session exclusively for Marsden students next term. Led by professional players from New Zealand, Korea, the US, Argentina, and Australia, the session will not only focus on basketball skills but also emphasize key themes like movement, wellness, fitness, education, and teamwork. It promises to be a valuable experience for students, blending sport with important life lessons.
Marsden extends a huge thank you to Mark Jurgeleit and Cello for their support in creating this exciting opportunity for our students and community to enjoy the dynamic world of women’s basketball.
