Over the school holidays a group of Marsden students once again had the incredible opportunity to take part in an exchange with Toin Gakuen in Japan, immersing themselves in school life, Japanese culture, and local traditions.

During the visit, students stayed with homestay families, giving them a real insight into everyday life in Japan. They participated in a wide range of school and cultural activities, including lessons in English and Japanese, music, PE, and calligraphy, as well as workshops in pottery, kendo, judo, and shadow boxing. Students collaborated closely with Toin peers, sharing skills, teaching games, and learning from one another.

The exchange included visits to local landmarks and cultural sites, such as Yokohama’s Cup Noodle Museum, Landmark Tower, Kamakura, and a magical day at Disneyland. Other highlights included a pear farm visit, village orientation, and exploring Tokyo with their hosts. Students also experienced traditional Japanese arts, such as Wadaiko drumming, tea ceremonies, and Shaolin exercises.

Accompanying staff member Claire Potter reflected on the experience:

“Coming to Japan, and being part of Toin school and staying in homestays has been a marvellous experience. We have fully experienced another culture that is in many ways unique, and the students have grown in resilience, confidence, and understanding. What a wonderful opportunity.”

The exchange gave students a chance to broaden their cultural understanding, build friendships, and develop independence. From classroom activities to excursions and home stays, the experience was filled with laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories — moments the students will treasure long after returning home.
