On 21 October 2025, the Katherine Mansfield House & Garden hosted their annual fundraiser, Behind the Headlines: Talking Books with Mike McRoberts at Samuel Marsden. The event brought together literature lovers and community members for an inspiring night of conversation, connection, and storytelling — all in support of maintaining the Category I Historic Place, where Katherine Mansfield’s creative legacy continues to be celebrated.

After a morning of uncertainty as Wellington’s wild weather caused flight delays, there was great excitement when Mike McRoberts arrived safely to take the stage. In conversation with Katherine Mansfield House & Garden Director, Cherie Jacobson, Mike shared powerful stories from his career — from his early days in radio to his time reporting from war zones, and his deep connection to his marae in Wairoa. His kōrero was warm, funny, and full of insight, offering the audience a fascinating look “behind the headlines.”

Marsden students played a role in supporting the evening. Senior volunteers welcomed guests, helped with catering, and ensured everything ran smoothly. Our student raffle ticket sellers impressed everyone with their enthusiasm — even convincing Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Paul Goldsmith, to buy a ticket!

The evening began with a glass of Hunter’s MiruMiru and concluded with warm thanks to all who attended despite the wild weather. Funds raised from the night will go towards the care and preservation of Katherine Mansfield House & Garden, ensuring it remains a place of creativity and inspiration for future generations.
