This week, the Marsden community gathered for a poignant morning of tradition and celebration to formally induct our Year 13 students as the leaders of the school for 2026. This special occasion offered a moment for students, staff, and whānau to reflect on the journey so far and the exciting legacy this cohort hopes to build.

A morning of tradition and connection

The day began in the quiet reflection in the Chapel with a Communion Service. This provided a grounding start to the day, focusing on the values of service and community that define the Marsden experience. Following the service, students and their families shared breakfast in the Cultural Centre and cafeteria, a wonderful opportunity for the Class of 2026 to connect with their supporters before the formal proceedings began.

Stepping into leadership

The Induction Service in the Auditorium was a highlight of the morning, marked by the presentation of leadership badges and moving speeches.

A significant moment in the ceremony was the rededication of the Gay Collins Rose Bowl. Originally awarded in 1949, this historic piece has been reintroduced for the incoming Head Girl to honour the school’s heritage. Principal Paula Wells presented the Rose Bowl to our 2026 Head Girl, Charlie Fitzgerald.

Other major leadership recognitions included:

  • The Isabel Campbell Cup: Awarded to 2026 Sports Captain, Bay Johnson.
  • The Jennifer Button Silver: Awarded to 2026 Head of Performing Arts, Jessica Caldwell.

Leading with Grit, Grace, and Authenticity

In her speech, Head Girl Charlie Fitzgerald reflected on the recent Year 13 leadership camp, where the group identified the core qualities they wish to embody: resilience, authenticity, grit and grace, leading through listening, humility, empathy, and gratitude.

"This badge for our Year 13 cohort means making the most of every day and every opportunity... because our 'lasts' are on the way. It means acknowledging how far we’ve come." - Charlie Fitzgerald, 2026 Head Girl

Charlie noted the special significance of this year, as the Class of 2026 will graduate during the 100th anniversary of the Marsden campus being in Karori, a milestone that adds a sense of historical weight to their leadership.

The essence of a wāhine toa

Principal Paula Wells addressed the assembly, emphasising that leadership at Marsden is not defined solely by a title, but by "walking the talk." She praised the year group for their commitment to being leaders who lead by truly listening and setting an example through everyday actions.

She reminded the students that whether they lead from the front or contribute quietly from the background, every Year 13 student has an integral role to play in the fabric of the school.

As the Class of 2026 begins their final year, we look forward to watching these young women lead with integrity, strength, and the spirit of Ad Summa.
