Marsden’s 2026 production, Take the Stage, was a vibrant celebration of the performing arts, showcasing the incredible creativity, commitment and talent of our students both on stage and behind the scenes. Bringing together music, dance, drama, and musical theatre, the production offered a dynamic evening of entertainment that highlighted the depth of artistic talent within the Marsden community.
The evening opened with a stirring medley from Les Misérables, conducted by Marsden's Director of Music, Marian Campbell, and featuring an impressive collaboration between student musicians and professional performers. Student Head of Performing Arts Jessica led the vocal performance, joined by special guest Alexandra McKellar, with both bringing power, poise and emotion to this memorable opening number. Jessica returned later in the programme for the Act 2 musical theatre performances, contributing to a second half that celebrated the strength and breadth of student talent on stage. Together, these moments set the tone for a show filled with energy, passion and professionalism.
This year’s production was made even more special by the return of director, producer and choreographer Alexandra McKellar, who curated the musical theatre section of the show. Alexandra worked closely with students to create a 45-minute homage to some of musical theatre’s most beloved productions. Her enthusiasm and expertise inspired students throughout the rehearsal process, creating an environment where creativity, encouragement and collaboration flourished.
Act 1
The programme featured an exciting variety of performances and styles. Act 1 brought together contemporary dance pieces, vocal performances, cultural dance, instrumental performance and iconic musical theatre numbers. These included Lotta’s original hip hop dance Yolo, Abigail and Suzannah’s moving rendition of When You’re Gone from Pitch Perfect, and Isla’s performance of the traditional Scottish dance Seann Triubhas. Harriet and Cleo brought energy and flair to Lay All Your Love On Me from Mamma Mia!, joined by Akithma, Maisie and Matilda, while Emily performed a powerful contemporary dance to Olivia Rodrigo’s Can’t Catch Me Now. Akshara showcased the beauty and precision of Indian Classical Kuchipudi dance, Abhitha and Grace performed Coldplay’s Viva La Vida on piano, and Abigail, Lilja and Kate brought Act 1 to a lively close with Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by The Andrews Sisters.
Act 2
Act 2 celebrated some of musical theatre’s most iconic productions, with performances from Wicked, Hamilton, Matilda, Six, Aida, and 13: The Musical. Students embraced the energy and humour of these productions with confidence and flair, supported by creative choreography and strong ensemble work. Standout moments included One Short Day from Wicked, Schuyler Sisters from Hamilton and the crowd-favourite Ex-Wives from Six.
Beyond the performances themselves, Take the Stage reflected the spirit of collaboration and support that defines the Marsden arts community. Student choreographers, performers, musicians, technicians and backstage crew all contributed to bringing the production to life with professionalism and enthusiasm. The show was a testament not only to artistic excellence, but also to the courage, commitment and teamwork of everyone involved.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Director of Performing Arts Sarah Wilson, Alexandra McKellar, the staff, musicians, and all students who contributed their time and talent to creating such a memorable production. Take the Stage was truly an unforgettable celebration of creativity, passion, and the joy of performance.
