William Pike Challenge Award

The William Pike Challenge is a year-long programme that all Year 8 students at Marsden work towards completing. The programme encourages young people to step outside their comfort zone, develop 21st-century skills, and achieve extraordinary things through adventure, service, and personal growth.

Inspired by New Zealander William Pike’s own experience of overcoming adversity, the Challenge empowers students to build confidence, resilience, leadership, and a deeper appreciation for the environment and their community.

Throughout the year, students complete three key elements of the Challenge:

  • Outdoor activities – Students participate in a range of outdoor experiences that encourage teamwork, perseverance, and a willingness to try new things. Marsden offers six outdoor activities, ensuring all students have the opportunity to complete this component of the Challenge.
  • Service activities – Students contribute to their community through meaningful service experiences, developing empathy, responsibility, and a sense of connection to others.
  • Passion project – As part of Science learning, students develop a personal passion project, researching an area of interest and taking action to make a positive difference.

Outdoor experiences may include activities such as camp in the Richmond Valley near Nelson, rock climbing, urban exploration, and an adventure day to Matiu/Somes Island. Students also participate in service opportunities such as community projects and local restoration activities.

Through the William Pike Challenge, students develop lifelong skills in teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and self-management while creating memorable experiences with their peers and building confidence in their own abilities.
